It started with one box and a very patient girlfriend

One box, no space, and an idea

In 2024, Charlie — the founder of Bike Box Hire UK — was told in no uncertain terms by his girlfriend that his bike box was taking up too much space. It was sitting in the corner of their flat, gathering dust between trips, and something had to give.

Rather than selling it, Charlie had a better idea. He started renting it out to other cyclists who needed one for a trip. Word spread quickly. Demand picked up. And then, to his girlfriend's absolute shock, Charlie bought another box. And then another. And another.

What started as a way to justify keeping one bike box quickly turned into something much bigger.

From side project to nationwide network

Fast forward two years and Bike Box Hire UK is a properly established business with over 100 boxes across more than 30 hub locations throughout the United Kingdom. Our hubs are local bike shops and cycling businesses who share our passion for making cycling travel accessible to everyone.

We've also taken the business international, partnering with a servicing hub in Pollenca, Majorca — one of Europe's most popular cycling destinations. Cyclists can now hire a box from their nearest UK hub, fly out, and have their bike rebuilt, stored, cleaned and packed by our team on the ground. It's the full package.

When Charlie's brother James came aboard, he brought something the business desperately needed: a rock-solid booking system built from the ground up. James understood that the service we provide simply cannot fail. Turning up to a hub and your box not being there? That's not an inconvenience — that's a ruined trip.

That's why James painstakingly designed and coded a fail-safe booking platform that manages every box, every hub, every booking, and every edge case. Real-time availability, automatic reminders, live tracking — everything working behind the scenes so that when you show up on the morning of your flight, your box is exactly where it should be.

Why we genuinely believe nobody should own a bike box

A decent bike box costs upwards of £300. It takes up a huge amount of space. You use it a few times a year at most, and the rest of the time it sits in your garage, your hallway, or your very patient partner's living room.

We genuinely don't think anyone should have to own one. Renting makes so much more sense — pick up a box from a hub near you, fly with your bike, drop it back when you're home. No storage headaches. No upfront cost. No dust.

We're working hard behind the scenes to bring the cost of renting down even further, making it a no-brainer even for those who travel regularly. Our goal is simple: make renting the way cyclists travel with their bikes.
